Indonesia’s calendar has an important distinction that is easy to miss: a national public holiday (libur nasional) is not the same thing as collective leave (cuti bersama).
Each year, the government publishes both lists in a Joint Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs, the Minister of Manpower, and the Minister for Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform. The 2026 decree sets 17 national public holidays and 8 collective-leave days. The public-holiday calendar reflects Indonesia’s religious diversity, including Islamic, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and Confucian celebrations, alongside dates such as New Year’s Day, Labour Day, Pancasila Day and Independence Day.
National public holidays
These are the official nationwide holidays. They are distinct from an employee’s annual leave balance, although organisations that provide essential public services can still roster staff. In 2026, the calendar includes Eid al-Fitr, Nyepi, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Vesak, Independence Day and Christmas, among others.
Collective leave: cuti bersama
Collective leave days are placed next to holidays or weekends to create longer breaks. For 2026, they fall on 16 February; 18, 20, 23 and 24 March; 15 and 28 May; and 24 December.
Their effect depends on who employs you:
- For civil servants (ASN), the 2026 Presidential Decree provides that these eight days do not reduce annual leave. If an ASN cannot take collective leave because of their role, their annual-leave entitlement is increased by the number of missed collective-leave days.
- For private-sector employees, collective leave is facultative: the employer and workers (or their union) determine its application under the employment agreement, company rules or collective agreement. A company may close and count the day against annual leave, keep operating, or offer a more generous arrangement. Check your employer’s policy before making plans.
That is why a long Indonesian holiday period can mean different things for different people. The date may be on the national calendar, but only a libur nasional is a public holiday; a cuti bersama day needs to be read alongside your employment terms. For 2026 planning, the biggest clusters are Chinese New Year in February, Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr in March, and Christmas in December.
Planning around big clusters like Chinese New Year or Eid al-Fitr often means reserving days elsewhere for trips you already have in mind. The planner’s monthly vacation caps let you cap how many vacation days are used per month, so the rest of your allowance stays protected for the rest of the year.
